Who is the Urgent Care Centre (Northwick Park Hospital) for?

The Urgent Care Centre (UCC) at Northwick Park Hospital is for children, young people and adults that require treatment for minor illnesses and injuries.

What does the service provide?

Individuals who walk into the emergency department are assessed by a UCC clinician to determine whether the conditions require care in the Emergency Department or the UCC. Staff at UCC includes general practitioners (GPs), nurse practitioners, emergency nurse practitioners, and emergency care practitioners.

For children there is a designated waiting area and, if required, they will be seen in the paediatric area of the Emergency department.

If a person’s condition is not thought to need urgent care, the patient may be directed back to their GP or to an alternative service as appropriate, for example a family planning clinic, pharmacy or dentist.

UCC is not an alternative to a patient's own GP practice and the GP should usually be contacted first.

After the service, if patient requires a follow-up, the UCC staff will advise on what treatment is required and who will deliver it.

For most conditions the follow-up can be undertaken by patient’s own GP, but in some cases the UCC team may refer the patient to a specialist team, such as surgery or orthopaedics. This will usually be at Northwick Park Hospital, but for exceptional cases may be at another hospital.

Individuals can attend the UCC without an appointment or referral from a health professional.
